Current Roughcut Wood Price Estimates

The

A board foot (bdft.) is a standard of measurement equal to one square foot that is one inch thick. This measurement is used to measure the volume of lumber. A board foot is 12″ X 12″ X 1″.

A “quarter” system is commonly used in the hardwood lumber industry when referring to thickness. 4/4 refers to a 1 inch thick board, 6/4 is 1-1/2 inch, 8/4 is 2 inches, 12/4 is 3 inches. The numerator are the number of "quarter inches" over the base (denominator) of four quarter inches (or one inch).

These are some estimates of rough cut lumber prices if they were cut for board lumber. We cut logs for the unique properties that exist within the log. This means that a typical sawyer would discard what we see as the most valuable parts of a log when making unique wood projects. The following prices are only for comparison, our slabs are priced for unique characteristics.

Wood Descriptions:

Red Oak

Common Names: Red Oak, Northern Red Oak, Gray Oak, American Red Oak, Quercus rubra
Origin: Midwest and eastern United States
Color: Light to medium brown, commonly with a reddish tinge
Janka Hardness: 1290 lbs/ft
Avg. Weight: 5.3 lbs/bdft
General Workability: Red Oak is moderately hard. It cuts, glues, stains, and finishes well. The coarse grain can cause trouble when laser cutting, and delicate pieces are prone to breaking.

White Oak

Common Names: White Oak, American White Oak, Stave Oak, Fork-Leaf Oak, Ridge White Oak, Quercus alba
Origin: Midwest and eastern United States
Color: Light to medium brown commonly with an olive cast
Janka Hardness: 1360 lbs/ft
Avg. Weight: 3.91 lbs/bdft
General Workability: White Oak is moderate hard. It cuts, glues, stains, and finishes well. White Oak has a fairly high shrinkage rate resulting in mediocre stability. White Oak works well for turning and steam-bending.

Poplar

Common Names: Poplar, Tulip Poplar, Yellow Poplar, Tulipwood, White Poplar, Liriodendron tulipifera
Origin: Midwest and eastern United States
Color: Grayish-white to pale yellow sapwood with green to brown heartwood, color darkens and browns with time and light exposure
Janka Hardness: 540 lbs/ft
Avg. Weight: 2.75 lbs/bdft
General Workability: Poplar is very easy to work with, so it's a great wood for beginner scroll sawyers. It cuts and engraves with a laser well and takes paint very well.
